The school in this video is Oasis Christian School, which our organization serves.
Why do we have to do school work? The video above shows why we have to do school work, because children who can't go to school can go to school, hang out with their friends, shout and laugh. In addition, since childhood, we can study the Word of God and learn about the character of Jesus and be nurtured.
The Dominican Republic is growing nationally, but it's also facing three of the most difficult problems. First of all, the gap between the rich and the poor is so great that there are so many people who don't have basic livelihood security, and per capita incomes continue to rise, but only the areas where Europeans, Americans, and Canadians visit to enjoy recreation are rapidly developing. There are so many people out there who feel a relative deprivation and can't live like human beings, especially the Haitian people who have migrated.
Second, Haiti is in a state of national disintegration, and Haiti has reached a point where it can't solve its problems on its own, but no one is stepping up to help them. The U.N., the U.S., and Canada can't find a reason to help Haiti, so more and more people are sneaking into the Dominican Republic, fleeing there to survive.
Third, the destruction of families in the Dominican Republic is severe, and in the poor area of Santo Domingo that I visited, around 80 percent of family had no father in their homes, and many of the teenage girls were pregnant before they reached adulthood and had children. And young parents are not properly educated or responsible for their children, and in the end, poverty and hardship are at their most destructive.
I've been trying to figure out what I can do to serve the Dominican Republic and Haiti, and in the end, all I have is a Jesus Christ-centered education, and I don't need a school that teaches them how to eat better and live better. I've already seen a lot of boys struggling to get out of poverty through baseball, and there are actually a lot of successful MLB players from the Dominican Republic. As a result, most of the dreams and visions of children have escaped from poverty and have become better eating and living well.
So I think that Jesus Christ-centered school ministry is essential, and it is not seen or shown right now with its fruits or effects.But when our school-educated children go out into the world after 10 or 20 years, they're going to have amazing things going on that they're going to live as disciples of Jesus, and I'm going to sow the seeds day by day in anticipation of that.
We remember that it is not about Well-Being, but it is all about Jesus.

왜 꼭 학교 사역을 해야할까요? 위의 영상만 봐도 왜 우리가 학교사역을 해야하는지 알 수 있습니다. 학교에 다닐 수 없는 아이들이 학교에 다니며 친구들과 어울려 놀며 소리치고 웃을 수 있기 때문입니다. 뿐만아니라, 어린시절부터 하나님의 말씀을 공부하고 예수님의 성품에 대해서 배우며 양육받을 수 있기 때문입니다.
도미니카 공화국은 국가적으로 성장하고 있습니다. 그런데 겉모습과는 다르게 세 가지 가장 어려운 문제들에 직면하고 있기도 합니다.
첫째, 빈부격차가 워낙 심해서 기본적인 삶의 보장을 받지 못하는 사람들이 너무 많습니다. 1인당 국민소득은 계속해서 오릅니다. 그러나 유럽피안들과 미국, 캐나다 사람들이 휴양을 즐기기 위해 방문하는 지역만 급속도록 발전하고 있습니다. 그 속에서 상대적인 박탈감을 느끼며 인간답게 살아가지 못하는 사람들이 너무도 많습니다. 특별히 이주해서 온 아이티 사람들의 삶은 처참합니다.
둘째, 최근 아이티가 국가적으로 붕괴사태에 놓여있습니다. 아이티는 스스로 그 문제를 해결할 수 없는 상태에 이르렀습니다. 그러나 누구도 그들을 나서서 도와주지 않고 있습니다. 유엔도 미국도 캐나다도 아이티를 도와줄 이유를 찾지 못합니다. 결국, 살기위해 그곳을 도망쳐서 몰래 불법적으으로 도미니카 공화국으로 오는 사람들이 계속해서 늘어나고 있습니다.
셋째, 도미니카 공화국 가정의 파괴가 심각합니다. 제가 방문했던 산토도밍고의 빈민 지역은 85프로가 가정에 아버지가 없다고 합니다. 많은 청소년 여자아이들이 성인이 되기 전에 임신을 하고 자녀를 출산합니다. 그리고 어린 부모들은 그 자녀를 제대로 교육하거나 책임지지 못합니다. 결국 가난과 어려움 속에 가장파괴가 심각한 수준에 이르고 있습니다.
도미니카 공화국과 아이티를 섬기기 위해서 무엇을 하면 좋을까 고민 해보았습니다. 결국 예수그리스도 중심의 교육 밖에 없습니다. 그들에게 더 잘 먹고 잘 사는 방법을 가르치는 그런 학교는 필요 없습니다. 이미 수많은 남자 어린이들이 야구를 통해서 가난에서 벗어나기 위해 몸부림 치고 있는 것을 보았습니다. 실제로 도미니카 공화국 출신의 성공한 MLB 선수들이 많이 있습니다. 그러다 보니 어린이들의 꿈과 비전이 대부분 지금의 가난에서 벗어나 더 잘먹고 잘사는 것이 되어버렸습니다.
그래서 예수 그리스도 중심의 학교사역이 필수라고 생각합니다. 지금은 그 열매나 효과과 바로 보여지거나 나타나지는 않습니다. 그러나 저희 학교를 통해서 교육받은 아이들이 10년, 20년이 지나서 사회에 나가게 되었을 때에 그들은 예수님의 제자로서 살아가는 놀라운 일들이 벌어지게 될 것입니다. 저는 그것을 기대하며 하루하루 열심히 씨앗을 뿌릴 계획입니다.
우리는 절대 잊어서는 안됩니다. 이 모든 사역은 '웰빙'이 목적이 아니라, '예수님의 제자'를 세우는 사역이 목적입니다.
